That is the Rhein river in the background, bigger and more famous than the beloved Mosel near my home. My first glimpse of Germany was of this river valley when I first came here in the summer of 1998. In my opinion not as picturesque or quaint as the Mosel River valley which I used to live on back in 2002, but still a cool experience by boat. The hill I'm standing on has an old Burg (castle) which overlooks over the old town of Bacharach. The town itself is really interesting. Many of the buildings have been preserved in their original condition for hundreds of years. The Altes Haus Restaurant is over 600 years old and has never had to be restored. I had a great dinner there once, though it was almost ruined by the sock-smelling rank old moldy cheese that is so popular there.
